About ProjectWeb
For years project staff have dreamed of easily accessible updated project documents so that the information they need does not have to be found in individual ring binders or mail/e-mail inboxes at a variety of locations. If project-relevant information is gathered in one place, participants can in many situations fetch the material themselves whenever they need it, which prevents the time delay that results when one person must first find the documents and then forward them to where they are needed. In international projects delays are even more critical because the participants are often located in different time zones. Grontmij | Carl Bro already started to use a ProjectWeb server as a solution to these problems as an experiment in late 1996 and is today using a further development of ProjectWeb for several projects of different sizes. ProjectWeb is a virtual site on the Internet where several project partners' staff can co-operate. ProjectWeb is basically a knowledge- and information-sharing application where the functions are placed at the participants' disposal by means of a Web interface. In this way participants at any location have quick access to the latest project information and relevant project data by means of a browser. ProjectWeb is an Internet-based tool that meets Grontmij | Carl Bro's own needs. Idea and concepts began many years before e-mail and Internet became popular, and now the Internet has made it possible to realise them. Grontmij | Carl Bro has decided to start offering the ProjectWeb service to external users in 2000. The solution consists of: · ProjectWeb · a Project Administrator module ProjectWebProjectWeb provides overviews that may contain summaries and other types of documentation relating to the project. The documents on the ProjectWeb may thus gradually develop into a comprehensive project archive.ProjectWeb provides functions that make it possible to copy documents from the company's own servers to ProjectWeb, from where they can be copied to another project participant or be viewed over the Web. All files are stored with document information that provides a brief description of contents, version information, date, etc. in addition to a reference to the file. It is possible to sort the documents according to different criteria such as size, date, copied by, and title. Every time a user visits ProjectWeb, it will display a list of the documents that have most recently been copied to ProjectWeb. The list contains a direct link to the relevant documents, thus enabling the user to go straight to the right directory. All supplementary information about the documents such as author, version, summary, etc. are stored in a Microsoft SQL database. The database solution ensures flexible handling of even very large amounts of data. Data safety and integrity are vital to almost any project - for example, when working with technical documents, where even the sligtest error can have very serious consequences. Operation and monitoring of ProjectWeb in a concrete case is carried out by

ProjectWeb Administrator moduleThis module enables the project administrator to control the directory structure and the access rights of the individual participants in the project over the Internet. Therefore the project administrator is in full control of the ProjectWeb structure so that a project-specific structure can be maintained.Project creationWhen the agreement for the Grontmij | Carl Bro ProjectWeb service has been signed, Grontmij | Carl Bro creates the project administrator for the project. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
